A local college had an infill city lot on which they wished to develop 7 units of student housing, with a limited budget. Private homes as well as basic affordable housing projects existed in the neighborhood. We strove to create a peaceful, sheltered private community for these young people, some of whom are married couples, giving each unit a private entry and identity, and an outdoor porch or patio and garden. Cars were grouped at the front of the lot, with individual storage units enclosing the parking, a communal laundry and mailbox area tucked to the right as you approach the building. An open courtyard with landscaping and a table forms the central spine to access all the units and offer a communal space.
